An investigation has been launched after a bus was seen travelling the wrong way on the M67 in Greater Manchester.

Witnesses reported seeing the double-decker Bee Network vehicle near Hattersley roundabout at about 05:45 BST on Friday.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said there were no passengers on board at the time.

The bus operator, Metroline, is carrying out a full investigation.

Nick Fairclough, Transport for Greater Manchester's (TfGM) interim deputy director of bus, said there were no passengers on board and that the driver was assisted off the motorway safely. He said the bus had not been stolen and that operator Metroline was carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

"Safety remains the overriding priority for the Bee Network and we will work with the operator to establish the circumstances that led to this incident and take any appropriate action," he added.

Greater Manchester Police said officers attended after receiving reports of a bus on the wrong side of the motorway, but it was no longer at the scene when they arrived.

The force said enquiries were continuing.
