A 78-year-old man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after an off-duty police officer was killed in a crash.

Alice Mayo, 29, died after the blue Fiat 500 she was driving was involved in a crash with a white Land Rover Defender on 7 February on the A534 Spark Lane, in Arclid, Cheshire.

David Millar, of Sandbach Road in Congleton, has been bailed and is next set to appear at Crewe Magistrates' Court on 23 November.

Mayo, who worked as an officer in Macclesfield, was described by Chief Constable Mark Roberts as a "very popular and well regarded" member of the force.

"She was a dedicated professional who will be missed by all those who knew her," he said in a tribute issued after her death.

"She was beautiful inside and out. She will leave a huge hole in our lives but also a legacy of laughter, fun, and sunshine," Mayo's family said.

"She achieved so much in her short life and leaves behind a heartbroken but incredibly proud family.

"Alice was at a time of her life where she was really happy. She overcame so much but she never gave up. She was taken far too soon."
