Town gets benches, maps and signs in £800k refresh

Fifteen new benches and 19 hanging baskets are among new additions in a town centre as part of a £800,000 "refresh".

Signs, including posts and totems with display maps, recycling bins and 14 cycle hoops are also part of the project in Wellington, Shropshire.

Telford and Wrekin Council said they are part of public realm improvements aimed "to change the landscape of Wellington Town Centre" and are part of a wider borough programme.

Church Street has been redeveloped, with footpaths widened, kerbs replaced and new drainage to make it safer and more accessible, it added.

Across the borough, infrastructure improvements have aimed to support sustainable travel, improve footpaths and parking.

Councillor Paul Davis, cabinet member for strong communities, local pride and veterans, said the authority was committed to "raising standards in Wellington Town Centre and creating a place that residents, businesses and visitors can be proud of".

"These improvements are about more than enhancing the look and feel of the town centre," he said.

"They are about creating high-quality, welcoming public spaces that encourage people to spend time in Wellington, support local businesses and help build pride in our town."
