A cordon was in place at an alleyway in York on Thursday

A man has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault on a woman in York city centre.

The incident took place on Wednesday night in the alleyway linking Spurriergate and Church Lane, according to North Yorkshire Police.

A cordon was in place near the scene on Thursday, with police vehicles parked near both entrances to the alleyway.

A 22-year-old man remained in police custody, officers said, meanwhile the victim of the attack was being supported by specialist officers.
