A section of the M2 in Kent remains closed in both directions following a crash in which a man has died, according to police.

Kent Police said the motorway was closed after a pedestrian in his 50s was struck by multiple vehicles.

Officers said the crash happened just after 21:00 GMT on Tuesday on the coastbound carriageway near Medway Services, with the force warning that the road would remain closed for "a significant period of time".

The man's next of kin has been informed, Kent Police said.

Emergency services attended the scene where the pedestrian was confirmed to be dead, the force added.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage.

The M2 remains closed in both directions between junctions three and five (coastbound) and junctions five and four (London-bound).

National Highways wrote on social media that investigation works were ongoing, with closures expected to remain in place throughout the morning.

Diversions were in place taking London-bound drivers on the A249 to the M20 and then back to the M2 via the A228.

Coastbound drivers are being sent on the A229 to Maidstone to the M20, and then back to the M2 via the A249.
