Frustration over closure of public toilets in Fort Augustus

There is growing frustration in a picturesque Loch Ness-side village at the extended closure of its public toilets.

A burst pipe shut the loos on the A82 in Fort Augustus more than three weeks ago.

The community council said cafes and restaurants had been inundated with visitors wanting to use their toilets, and it has called for a temporary facility to be set up.

Highland Council said the toilets' foundations would need to be checked for any damage, adding that it was not possible to say when they could be reopened.

Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Community Council chairwoman Deirdre MacKinnon said the village welcomed "huge numbers" of visitors year-round.

She said not being able to provide public toilets was "unacceptable".

"This situation is putting severe pressure on local businesses, cafes and restaurants as people have nowhere else to go," said MacKinnon.

"We want Highland Council to recognise the seriousness of the issue and make restoring the public toilets a top priority.

"At the very least we are asking them to provide temporary toilets until permanent restoration work is complete."

Highland Council said the burst had affected the toilets' water supply.

A spokesperson said: "Exploration works are required to ensure that there has been no damage to the foundations of the building."

They said a full list of repairs would be prepared and put out to tender.

The spokesperson added: "We are unable to confirm a reopening date at this time."
