A pedestrian was left seriously injured when they were hit by a motorbike shortly after it failed to stop for police.

West Yorkshire Police said the rider had ignored the request to pull over in Thornton Road, in Bradford, just after 15:30 BST on Wednesday, prompting officers to pursue the vehicle for a short time.

The Suzuki SV 650 motorbike was then involved in a collision with a man in his 70s in Legrams Lane, with the pedestrian taken to hospital for what police described as with life-threatening injuries.

The force said the motorbike rider and passenger left the scene, but after an area search, two 17-year-old boys were arrested in connection with the incident shortly after 16:15.

The force confirmed they remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of offences including theft of motor vehicle, failing to stop and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed it was assessing a referral from the West Yorkshire force to determine whether an investigation was required over the incident.

Road closures were in place in Legrams Lane and Summerville Road on Wednesday evening while inquiries were conducted at the scene.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident have been asked to come forward.
