Sonny Green came sixth in the latest season of Britain's Got Talent

A spoken word poet who came sixth in Britain's Got Talent said he wanted to do a theatre tour and inspire people into the art form, regardless of their background.

Sonny Green, from Southend-on-Sea, was on the 19th season of the popular ITV show and impressed the judges with his poetry that explored what it means to be British.

While speaking to BBC Essex's breakfast presenter Sonia Watson, Green said: "I would love to do a theatre tour, which is kind of coming together to be fair.

"It doesn't matter what you sound like or what your regional accent is or what even your education is - but you can do it."

His poem, What England Means To Me, celebrates diversity.

He received a standing ovation from judges Simon Cowell, KSI, Alisha Dixon and Amanda Holden when he performed it during the competition.

His verses referred to "Turkish barbers with the sharpest trim" - and were laced with references to British quirks and humour.

KSI said it made him feel emotional, and Dixon was reduced to tears.

He told BBC Essex that he wants to continue to inspire young people into the art form and the English language.

Green added: "We're living in a world these days where we are losing connection with our words and the way we communicate.

"Our phones are such a big distraction, and just to champion actual spoken word storytelling, bringing words to life, making sure we don't give up on all the good things about connecting through language and the English language and make that human connection.

The Hawkstone Farmers' Choir was named the winner of Britain's Got Talent.

Jeremy Clarkson originally set up the singing group to support farmers around his farm in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, with their mental health.
