A man who pretended to be a fraud investigator and stole £80,000 from an "elderly and vulnerable" woman has been jailed for more than three years.

Isa Janjua, 21, cold-called the Huddersfield-based victim in November 2024, claiming he was a police officer looking into financial fraud.

He convinced the woman to share her bank details and took her to a shop where he made her buy expensive watches, according to police.

Janjua, of Murray Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, was jailed for three years and nine months at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday after he was convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud and failure to comply with a section 49 notice.

Det Con Callum Wallace, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "Janjua preyed on an elderly and vulnerable woman, gained her trust, and then abused that trust in the extreme to defraud her for what was a very significant sum of money."

He said police would never ask for account details over the phone.

"If you receive a call asking for your personal details, please hang up," he added.

"We have lots of support and advice on our website and how to report should these things happen."
