A former teacher who admitted sexually abusing a girl who was under 16 has been jailed.

William Caton, of Rose Lane, Diss, Norfolk, pleaded guilty to four counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and three counts of sexual activity with a child.

The 28-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Det Con Georgina Read, from Suffolk Police's safeguarding and investigations unit, said Caton "abused his position of trust as a teacher, manipulating a child who was entrusted in his care".

"The impact of this has been significant on the victim, who has shown great courage throughout the investigation," she added.

"I hope Caton's conviction provides her with some comfort and closure."

Caton, whose offences all related to one victim, a girl under 16, was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.

Read said: "We understand how difficult it can be for a victim of sexual abuse to disclose it.

"I would like to assure the public that all reports are investigated by specially trained detectives who will act robustly against perpetrators.

"We can also help victims access specialist support services that they may need."
