Investigation to take place after church blaze

A joint police and fire investigation is set to take place after a blaze at a church in the village of Kilburn.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the two-storey Kilburn Methodist Church in Chapel Street at 00:24 BST on Friday. Six appliances and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene.

Residents in neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution and the road was closed while firefighters dealt with the blaze.

Fire crews left the scene at 07:20, the road was reopened and residents were allowed to return home. However, in an update at 10:13, the fire service said firefighters had returned to the scene following reports of smoke coming from the building.

A spokesperson for the service said firefighters were damping down hotspots and monitoring conditions.

No injuries have been reported and it has not been confirmed how many homes were evacuated.
