Bird observatory flies high with wildlife award

Alderney Bird Observatory has landed a conservation prize after helping the island win three awards at the Floral Guernsey Foundation Community Awards.

Judges visited the observatory's base at the Hut at Saye in June, where they met volunteers and learned about ongoing bird recording work.

The group went on to win the Conservation and Wildlife Award, the fourth time an Alderney organisation has claimed the honour.

The Hut at Saye was also named best new project with judges describing it as "the outstanding entry" after hearing how children used the facility alongside volunteers who helped rebuild and develop the site.

Alderney Railway Society picked up the top prize in the heritage category

Alderney's winning streak continued in the heritage category, where the Alderney Railway Society picked up the top prize. Judges visited Braye Station and saw flower beds cared for by local volunteers.

The awards celebrate community projects across the Bailiwick, from conservation and heritage to gardening and wildlife.
