Arson fear after cricket pavilion destroyed by fire

A historic cricket pavilion in the grounds of a North Yorkshire estate has been destroyed by fire.

The blaze took place at the Deer Park pavilion in the grounds of Studley Royal in Ripon on Sunday afternoon.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) said the cause of the fire was currently under investigation.

Studley Royal Cricket Club said they believed it was "highly likely" the fire had been started deliberately. A spokesperson said the loss of the building would be felt by past and current players "who call the Deer Park ground their cricketing home".

The club said the building, which is believed to date back to the post-war period, had become a recognisable part of the Nidderdale cricketing scene.

In a statement, NYFRS said an investigation team had attended, "however the cause of the fire is currently undetermined".

The cricket club spokesperson urged anyone who witnessed any activity, people or vehicles near the Deer Park ground on 30 August between 16:30 and 17:30 BST to contact the police or the club.

"We need as much information as possible, even if it is the smallest thing," they said.

The club also appealed to the community to help as they plan and fundraise for a replacement to the destroyed building.

A National Trust spokesperson said no-one was hurt in the incident and they were working closely with the relevant authorities.

"We like to express our sincere thanks to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue for their swift response in bringing the fire under control," a spokesperson added.
