A man has been arrested after a police officer was injured when stopping an e-bike.

On Thursday, officers on Wallasey Road, Wirral, saw two men on an e-bike riding in an anti-social manner, according to Merseyside Police.

When they saw police approaching, one of the men is said to have attempted to flee on the bike, but crashed into an officer, causing arm and leg injuries.

An 18-year-old man from Seacombe was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault, dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He remains in police custody.

Neighbourhood inspector Sharon Robinson at Merseyside Police said: "No one should face violence or injury for simply doing their job."

'Clear message'

"Assaults on officers will never be tolerated," she continued, but added: "I hope this incident shows how committed and determined our officers are to serve our communities."

"This officer put himself in harm's way to protect the public from a dangerous e-bike rider, injuring himself in the process, but his brave actions led to the arrest of a suspect.

"We will continue to take robust action against those who put others at risk through dangerous or illegal riding and driving.

"This arrest sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders, seize vehicles where offences are identified and bring those responsible before the courts.

"I would also ask anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage, to come forward and assist our investigation," she added.
