Man admits killing 82-year-old in stabbing

A man has admitted killing an 82-year-old who was found with stab wounds in Derby.

Gerard Ring was attacked in Whitecross Gardens, off Kedleston Road, at about 14:20 BST on 6 September last year.

Julian Donoher, 51, of Whitecross Gardens, appeared at Derby Crown Court on Monday, when he denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

Judge Shaun Smith KC has told Donoher he will be sentenced on 22 September.

Remanding the defendant in custody, the judge said: "I'm going to sentence you next Tuesday. You will be over the [video] link, you don't have to come to court.

"It's going to be a hospital order of some description."

Donoher - who wore a white T-shirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark-coloured zipped hoodie - said "thank you" as he left the dock.
