Goal in sight for club's football pitch repairs
North Yorkshire CouncilWork to install a new playing surface at Scarborough Sports Village has entered its final phase, with a completion date now confirmed.
The 3G pitch ,home to Scarborough Athletic FC and Scarborough Ladies FC, was due to be resurfaced last year, but this was delayed after unexpected structural issues were discovered.
North Yorkshire Council said the project would be finished by 26 June, in time for the start of the 2026/27 season.
Councillor Simon Myers said: "This project has been a priority for us ever since our commitment to protecting the pitch's long-term future."
The community pitch has undergone a significant programme of structural repairs to address issues identified during a site survey last year.
Contractor Willmott Dixon has completed groundwork to stabilise the base, allowing installation of the new surface to begin this week.
Myers said he was "delighted" the scheme had reached its final stage and that the new surface would be ready "well in advance of the new season".
He thanked communities "for their patience and cooperation over the last few months".
The pitch was out of action for the entire 2025/26 campaign, forcing Scarborough Athletic to play home fixtures at Bridlington Town's ground.
Willmott Dixon director Chris Yates said the scheme was making "strong progress" and acknowledged the value of the centre to local people.
"We know how important the facility is to the Scarborough community and are pleased the new surface is set to be installed in time for the new season," he said.
Scarborough Athletic has announced its first fixture at the refurbished ground will be a pre-season friendly against Barnsley on 25 July, kicking off at 13:00 BST.
