Up to 13,000 people are expected to take part

Thousands of runners are to take to city centre streets with residents and visitors warned it will lead to some road closures.

The route of the Great North 10k will take an estimated 13,000 competitors past landmarks including Grey's Monument, in Newcastle city centre, the Grainger Market, the Tyne Bridge, and both universities.

It begins and ends on the Great North Road, utilising the beginning section of the Great North Run course, and throughout runners will be cheered on by spectators, with live music, and entertainment zones.

Organisers AJ Bell said many use the event as the "perfect stepping stone" for building towards the famous half marathon on 13 September.

Closures, which have been agreed with Newcastle City Council, will be implemented in phases starting between 04:00 – 09:45 and re-opening between 12:45 and 15:00 BST.

Organiser said the event aimed to inspire more people to get active regularly, with many runners raising money for local and national charities.

It also "showcases the very best of Newcastle".

A spokesperson said: "We understand that the road closures will cause some inconvenience.

"Please plan journeys in advance and allow for additional time as the road network will be busy."
