Deputy Lindsay De Sausmerez says the relevant committees will look at the proposals

Students have presented their proposals for improving active travel to deputies at the States of Guernsey.

The group spoke at an event, hosted by the Active Travel Group, at the Sixth Form Centre.

The students, from a range of schools, identified barriers to active travel, including not feeling safe on roads and a lack of bike sheds at schools.

Deputy Lindsay De Sausmerez, said the relevant committees would begin to look at how to meet the proposals.

She said: "It's really important that the solutions are built around their real-life experiences and that we listen to them and take their input in terms of finding solutions that are going to work for each school.

"It's not something you just pick up off a shelf and apply.

"It's something that has to be designed bespoke for each school environment because each of them is different."

She added: "Some of the solutions that were suggested today, I know that the relevant committees are going to go away and look at."

One student, Gazelle, said it was important children had access to active travel.

She explained: "We really, really want something like this to take action because, if it doesn't, I don't really see the point of it.

"Today we are doing this so that we can see the change and the change is not just for us, it's for everyone.

"But, at the moment we are focusing on schools and to give each and every single child a car-free route to travel on, without the fear.
