Firefighters extinguish large blaze in village

Firefighters tackling a large fire in Wigtoft on Monday

Firefighters have extinguished a large blaze in a Lincolnshire village after a "controlled burn left unattended," caused a fire in a large workshop and field, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said.

Eight fire crews were sent to the incident in Wigtoft, near Boston at about 16:00 BST on Monday.

Roads were closed and residents were asked to keep their doors and windows shut to prevent smoke from entering.

A spokesperson said: "Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue urge residents not to undertake controlled burns under any circumstances but reiterate this especially in these dry conditions, where the risk of fires spreading and growing out of control is significantly heightened".

Darren Rush, who lives nearby, said he was on his balcony when he looked over and saw a "massive amount of black smoke and flames".

"It was quite big," he said.

"Luckily, the wind was blowing away, obviously across the fields."
