A man has been killed and another pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by a car in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

The two men were walking along Barrack Street in Norwich at 01:22 GMT when they were struck.

The driver, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol, Norfolk Police said.

One man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The second pedestrian was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with serious, but not life-changing, injuries, according to the force.

It added the man arrested was being held for questioning at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.

The road was closed in both directions between its junctions with Charlton Road and Silver Road until 09:50.

Diversions were put in place as police officers worked at the scene. A car was recovered.
