Wear Wheels will be offering free bicycle maintenance sessions throughout the summer

Free cycling and bike maintenance sessions have been launched to encourage more people to keep active.

The Wear Wheels sessions, run by Sunderland Community Action Group, will be held between May and August and are open to people living in the city.

They will include two-hour guided bike rides starting from St Peter's cycling hub and will take in a number of the city's cycling routes.

Sunderland Community Action Group's project manager Richy Duggan said the sessions were open to anyone, including those "completely new to cycling".

Wear Wheels has been allocated money to fund the classes through the government's Active Travel England's Consolidated Active Travel Fund.

The additional funding will be used to support its recycled bike scheme, which provides people with a refurbished bicycle if they do not have one of their own.

"This funding allows us to reach more people than ever before," said Duggan.

"Every recycled bike and every ride helps build stronger community connections."
