Seven men face no charges in murder inquiry

Seven people arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of a man more than three years ago will face no charges.

Matthew Schofield, 34, died in the early hours of 11 June 2023, after being found unresponsive in Belgrave Road, Leicester, following an assault.

On Monday, Leicestershire Police said seven men had been released with no further action.

In total, 19 people were arrested in connection with the investigation. Police said six men and one woman remained suspects after being arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Nobody has ever been charged.

The force said that the death of Schofield remained an active investigation.

Det Insp Lorna Granville said: "I want to be clear, that this decision rests on the strength of the evidence we currently have available to us. This investigation will remain open and active.

"At the heart of this is Matthew's mum, Emma Daniels, who continues to live with the devastating loss of her son every day. She still grieves for Matthew and deserves justice and to know exactly what happened to him.

"We still believe there are people in the community who know what happened to Matthew and know who is responsible. Three years on it is not too late - if you witnessed something, heard conversations afterwards, or have been told information about those involved, please come forward and do the right thing."
