Moment police use stun guns on man with large knife

The moment a man who was holding a large knife fell to the ground after armed police rushed towards him and shot him with their stun guns has been caught on bodyworn cameras.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of an armed man near a school on Liverpool Road and New Moss Road in Irlam and Cadishead at about 09:00 BST on Tuesday.

Footage shows the man in his 60s cried out as police used their newly-issued Taser 10 guns to detain him after rushing towards him while demanding he dropped the knife.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, and remains in custody for questioning, the force said.

Det Ch Supt Neil Jones said the incident "demonstrates both the effectiveness of rapid public reporting and the professionalism of our officers in responding to a potentially dangerous situation".

"The deployment of the Taser 10 – the first incident where we have used the new technology - provided officers with a critical less-lethal option to resolve the incident safely and proportionately."
