The 774th Ilkeston Charter Fair starts in a matter of days

Town centre roads and car parks are set to close with the arrival of Ilkeston Charter Fair.

The event will return to the town for the 774th time when it opens at 18:00 BST on Wednesday.

To make space for the thrill rides, stalls and sideshows, Market Place and nearby streets, including parts of Bath Street and South Street, will be shut to traffic from Tuesday until 26 October, Erewash Borough Council said.

The car parks in South Street, Pimlico, Queen Street and Gregory Street will also be closed for the duration of the five-day fair.

The fair was established by Henry III in 1252.

James Dawson, leader of the borough council, described staging the event in the town centre as a "monumental task", but said: "We are determined to preserve its unique atmosphere."
