Labour reclaims seat in Walkley by-election

Labour has won back a council seat in Walkley after a by-election triggered by the resignation of a Green Party councillor.

Hannah Cawley was elected after securing 2,315 votes, while the Green's candidate, Seb Van Bilsen Irias, came second with 1,249.

Writing on social media, Cawley said she was "extremely happy" with the result.

The by-election was called after Andy Davies, who won the seat from Labour's then-council leader Tom Hunt in May, resigned for mental health reasons.

In her online statement, Cawley said: "Make no mistakes, this was a collective achievement. No-one ever achieved anything without help and support from other people because quite frankly that's how cooperative societies work.

"So a very big thank you and I will not let you down."

Reform UK came third, with candidate Andrew John Telford securing 541 votes, the Liberal Democrats came fourth with 112 and the Conservative Party came fourth with 59 votes.

France Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition's candidate, Isabelle Amy France, received 56 votes.

The turnout at Thursday's by-election was 28.18%.

Following Davies' resignation, there had been speculation that Hunt would try to reclaim the seat, but he said it was "the right time for someone else to represent our communities".
