Fallen climber airlifted from quarry

A climber has been airlifted to hospital after falling at Foggintor Quarry in Devon.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock were called to the scene at 15:05 BST on Sunday.

A spokesperson said the climber had feet first and had been "fortunate not to sustain a head injury".

They said he suffered injuries to his wrist, spine and ankles.

The man was treated by the air ambulance medics, while the search and rescue team packaged him in a vacuum mattress to protect his spine.

He was then evacuated to the helicopter outside the quarry.

A search and rescue spokesperson added: "We highly recommend that helmets are worn when climbing to reduce head injuries in falls and from falling rocks and debris from above."
