Norton Road in Stockton was still closed for repairs on Tuesday

A road has been closed for "complex repairs" to a collapsed sewer.

Northumbrian Water said there was no flooding in the streets or in people's homes around the sewer, near the junction of Newlands Avenue, Stockton-on-Tees.

The A139 Norton Road was closed at Norton Avenue on Monday evening.

"We believe that this will be a complex repair, and our teams will be working around the clock for the next few days to allow the road to be reopened as soon as possible," a spokesperson said.

Northumbrian Water said it was still investigating the cause.

Repair work is expected to last several days

Diversions were put in place around the busy road.

"Due to the location of the collapsed sewer, which is near the junction of Newlands Avenue, we have put a road closure in place on Norton Road in order to allow repairs to be carried out safely and to keep pedestrians and road users safe," Northumbrian Water said.
