Animal sanctuary team 'heartbroken' after break-in

An animal sanctuary has said that items "essential" to care of its residents have been stolen during a break-in.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Chard, home to 300 animals including chickens, pigs and horses, said staff were "heartbroken to think anyone would target us like this".

Thieves are said to have taken a pick-up truck, a quad bike, tools and wheelbarrows during the overnight break-in on 25 July.

Emma Purnell, the sanctuary's chief executive, said: "This has a massive impact to the charity because not only are we a small team and already under a lot of pressure, the team are having to find ways to be able to do their job with even less resources."

The sanctuary was closed to visitors on Monday for investigation work.

All of the animals are safe and well, Purnell said, but the theft had made it harder to feed and look after them.

"There's a mix of anger and upset. Ultimately, we're here to be a safe haven for our animals but also for our team," she said.
