'Dangerous' road to be closed for safety works

A road will temporarily close so improvement works can be carried out on a "dangerous junction" after at least 20 traffic incidents, the local MP has said.

Dorking and Horley MP Chris Coghlan said the incidents on the junction between Hoadley Road and Webber Street on Meath Green Lane started when it opened in spring 2025.

The MP said the development consortium at Westvale Park would close the road to through traffic in Horley later in the summer for pavement and safety improvement works.

The consortium said it acknowledged "the seriousness of the situation" and was committed to working with Surrey County Council (SCC) to deliver a safer road for the area "as quickly as possible".

Westvale Park Consortium is still building the housing development, which includes the junction.

A spokesperson from the consortium said: "We recognise the disruption this is causing for the local community and are working hard to complete the works during the current road closure on Meath Green Lane.

"Our strong ambition is to complete the works within the school summer holidays, subject to the necessary approvals and coordination with SCC."

Matt Furniss, SCC's cabinet member for highways, transport and economic growth, said he had asked the consortium to make changes to improve safety, including cutting back foliage at the junction.

"The effectiveness of the further safety improvements will then be monitored carefully, and further changes to the junction will be considered if necessary," Furniss added.

The MP says the consortium, which has been contacted for a comment along with Surrey County Council, has responsibility for the junction until it is adopted by Surrey Highways.

Coghlan, who had raised concerns about the junction in the past, said its design restricted visibility and was just off a hairpin bend.

He added that it had an ahead-only layout, leading drivers to make illegal turns which caused crashes.

"Many are worried a fatality will take place if nothing is done," the MP said.
