Derby City Council said the pool in Markeaton Park had suffered new damage

The future of a paddling pool at a park in Derby is being considered as it approaches the end of its lifespan, the city council has said.

The popular feature at Markeaton Park, which traditionally is set up and running for children each May, opened as scheduled last month but has since been closed due to damage to the pool surface.

Emergency repairs have been arranged and the council said teams were working towards reopening the pool in time for the school summer holidays.

However, in a statement, Derby City Council said: "It has now become apparent that the pool, which was created in the 1970s to replace the original 1920s paddling pool, is approaching the end of its lifespan."

The authority added it was "now actively exploring modern, long-term options for the future of the site".

The paddling pool was closed for the entire 2024 season

The paddling pool began to deteriorate in 2023 and underwent extensive repairs the following year.

It was shut for the whole 2024 season and reopened the following May after a "significant effort by the council to preserve and extend the life of the historic attraction".

However, Ndukwe Onuoha, cabinet member for streetpride, parks and leisure, said: "The pool was built in the 1970s and we face the reality that, despite our very best efforts to preserve it, the structure is simply reaching the end of its life.

"Our immediate focus is working with specialist contractors to repair the pool so families can enjoy it this summer, but the safety of the public is our absolute priority and that's what we're focussed on.

"While we're doing everything we can to get the pool open for the holidays, we're also looking ahead and actively exploring long-term options for the facility.

"There plans are at an early stage, but we are committed to involving the community in shaping its future, ensuring Markeaton Park remains a fantastic destination for families for years to come."
