Teenager dies and motorway closed after crash
Getty ImagesAn 18-year-old woman has died after her car left a motorway and caught on fire.
Wiltshire Police said the crash, involving a Vauxhall Corsa, occurred on the M4 westbound between junction 16 and junction 17 at about 17:35 BST on Sunday. The woman's next of kin have been told.
A full closure of both M4 carriageways has been in place from 15:00 BST to enable vehicle recovery from an embankment using a specialist crane.
The force said it did not know how long this would need to remain in place and advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys.
Officers also appealed for any witnesses of the crash or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to get in contact.
National Highways said westbound traffic would be diverted at junction 16 and routed via the A3102, B4042 and A429 to re-join the motorway at junction 17.
Vehicles over 4.2m (13ft) in height will be diverted via the A3102, A4 and A350.
The eastbound diversions will operate in reverse.
A separate crash also closed the road in the early hours of Sunday, between junction 14 (Hungerford) and junction 15 (Swindon East). This section of motorway has since reopened.
