Turning 60mph speed signs the wrong way 'mindless'
Jonathan DaviesTurning speed signs in a village on the A6 the wrong way round could have caused an accident, a councillor has said.
Two 60mph national speed limit signs on the boundary before entering Clifton, Penrith, were tampered with - an act Councillor Jonathan Davies described as "stupid and mindless".
He said it could have directed drivers to speed up in the village, but the signs had been "rapidly" fixed by Westmorland and Furness Council's highway team at the weekend.
He also said he would offer a £200 reward for information leading to the prosecution of those involved in this "irresponsible act".
The signs were deliberately turned around placing the end of speed limit signage wrongly, signalling to drivers that they could do the national limit at the entrance to the village instead of 30mph.
Cumbria Police said the offence would be classed as either causing a danger to road users or criminal damage.
The councillor said it was not the first time Clifton's signage had been interfered with in recent years.
"Turning around speed signs on a busy A road through a village might appear trivial to some, but the reality is not only is it a criminal offence, it also creates a massive safety risk," Davies said.
"It's irresponsible stupid and mindless and has put people and our community at risk."
