Four-year wait for trial over girl's crash death
West Yorkshire PoliceA trial date has been set for a man alleged to have killed a 16-year-old girl by driving dangerously on the A1(M) in West Yorkshire - more than four years after her death.
Sarah Cain, from Hartlepool, died after the Kia Niro she was travelling in collided with a Citroen C5 being driven by Mark Lee, a farmer from Raskelf in North Yorkshire, near Pontefract on 29 August 2024.
Two others were seriously injured in the crash.
Lee, 47, appeared at Leeds Crown Court earlier, where a trial date was provisionally set for 20 November 2028.
The defendant, who was granted bail, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by dangerous driving while uninsured/without a licence and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He is due to appear at the same court on 20 July for another plea and trial preparation hearing.
Sarah's family members attended Tuesday's hearing. In a statement issued after her death, they said they were "devastated", adding that the teenager "is and always will be irreplaceable".
