Investigation under way into recycling plant fire

An investigation has begun into the cause of a large fire at a recycling depot in south-east London.

About 100 firefighters were called to the site on Landmann Way, Bermondsey at about 17:30 BST on Monday. They brought the flames under control just before midnight and worked overnight to fully extinguish the fire, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Large clouds of thick smoke rising from the site were visible for miles around and people living nearby were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

Rail services using a line adjacent to the burning building were disrupted throughout Monday evening, but have since returned to normal.

Drones were used to provide aerial views of the building as firefighters used large turntable ladders to dampen the flames from above.

Large capacity, long distance hose lines were also used, LFB said.

LFB station commander Wayne Bloomfield, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters have worked hard overnight and have now fully extinguished this fire.

"At its height, the fire involved a large amount of refuse and the roof of a warehouse unit.

"A van and a car were also destroyed by the fire. One man was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service."
