Murder arrests over death of man in street brawl

A man died and a woman was injured in a late-night fight that police say involved "a number of people".

It happened on Drysdale Crescent in the Brunswick Village area of Newcastle sometime before 23:00 BST on Wednesday and left a man aged in his 50s dead at the scene while a woman, also in her 50s, required hospital treatment.

A man aged 43 and a woman aged 40 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Northumbria Police Det Insp Barry McAtominey said: "Although our investigation is at an early stage, we do believe that those involved were known to each other."

In addition to the murder arrests, a man aged 38 and another 40-year-old woman are being held on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All of those arrested remain in police custody.

Detectives asked anyone with information to contact the force and said the dead man's next of kin have been informed.
