A new mayor has said that "unpleasant" comments would not distract him from serving the town where he was born and raised.

Imran Hussain said the abuse he had received since becoming High Wycombe mayor reflected "the world we now live in, where negativity on social media can sometimes overshadow the overwhelming majority of positive voices".

Hussain, an independent councillor, acknowledged the "hundreds" of messages of support he had received from residents.

He said he wanted to use his year in office to champion kindness, resilience, inclusion and community spirit.

"I am experienced in the realities of social media and will not allow anonymous negativity to distract from the important work ahead," Hussain added.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the issue reinforced why youth and mental health would be central themes of Hussain's mayoral year.

"Young people have grown up in a world dominated by social media, where online negativity and pressure can have a profound impact on confidence, wellbeing and mental health," said Hussain.

He confirmed he would be supporting Wycombe Youth Action and Wycombe Mind as his chosen charities during the year ahead.

"Both organisations provide vital support to people across our community, often helping individuals facing intertwined issues involving youth services, emotional wellbeing and mental health support," he said.

"Their work is invaluable, compassionate and deeply needed."
