Date set for swimming pool refurb as costs rise

A swimming pool will be out of action for a refurbishment from September after months of delays.

The revamp of the Hurst Pool in Molesey, Surrey, had originally been due to begin in March but was delayed because of "contractor issues".

Elmbridge Borough Council said the leisure facility's modernisation would get under way on 7 September and was due to be completed by February, with costs rising from £1.3m to £1.45m.

Council cabinet member Simon Waugh said the project would "help ensure the pool remains a high-quality community asset that residents can enjoy for many years to come".

The scheme will see changes to the facility's decor, cafe and changing rooms as well as energy efficiency upgrades.

The Hurst Pool sees 157,000 visits each year, according to the council, and is operated by Places Leisure.

The nearest alternative facility while the pool is out of use is the Elmbridge Xcel Leisure Complex in Walton-on-Thames.
