Tributes to 'dedicated' former Manx politician
TYNWALDTributes have been paid to the "dedication and commitment" of former Isle of Man politician George Waft, who has died at the age of 89.
After serving on Onchan Commissioners for two decades, Mr Waft served in both the House of Keys and the Legislative Council in a national political career that spanned further 19 years.
Although he retired from politics in 2010, he remained active in the Onchan community, serving as president of the village's Royal British Legion (RBL) branch.
Onchan MHK Rob Callister said Mr Waft was "generous with his time" and had offered "a great deal of sensible and sound advice".
"He served our community with dedication and commitment, and I know that many people across Onchan and the wider Isle of Man will be saddened by his passing," he said.
"My thoughts and condolences are with George's family and friends at this difficult time."
'Greatly valued'
Born in 1937, he attended Tynwald Street and Desmesne Road Primary Schools before moving to Ballakermeen and Douglas High School.
He went on to attend the Isle of Man College of Further Education, Naval Training College, and Isle of Man Nurse Training School as well as studying through the Open University.
After serving as a catering officer with naval companies he moved on to a 30-year career with the then Department of Health and Social Security as a psychiatric nurse.
During that time he also served on the board of Onchan Commissioners, before being elected to the House of Keys at a by-election in the constituency in 1991.
He was elevated to the Legislative Council three years later, where he served for 16 years.
The Onchan branch of the RBL, which Mr Waft had been a member of since 1998, said he was a "highly respected member of the Onchan community".
"He was a caring, compassionate and greatly valued member whose kindness and support will be deeply missed," it added.
"Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Lynn, and to all his family and friends.
"George will be remembered with great affection and gratitude for his service to the Branch and the wider Onchan community."
