Residents in Kemptown have been urged to avoid the area due to the fire

A fire has broken out in a six-storey residential building in East Sussex.

Firefighters were called to Chesham Street in Kemptown, Brighton, at 11:54 BST on Monday following reports of a fire affecting the fifth and sixth floors of a building.

Nine fire engines, including an aerial ladder platform, supported by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, are at the scene, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said.

Residents have been advised to avoid the area, while those living nearby are urged to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire service said that it was working with other agencies including Sussex Police, Secamb, Local Authority Building Control and UK Power Networks.
