New rules introduced for residency and employment

New rules for residency and employment rights have been brought in.

The government said the new laws would make it easier for islanders to build and maintain their residency status and for businesses to recruit staff.

Long-term islanders can now qualify for Permanent Entitled status after 25 years of continuous residence, rather than the 30 years previously required.

It is hoped a more streamlined system with shorter forms for business licence and staffing applications, along with clearer guidance and fewer information requirements will make it easier to recruit staff.

Assistant chief minister deputy Malcolm Ferey said the changes would "streamline Jersey's outdated housing and work controls".

This would result in "lightening the administrative burden for businesses and giving islanders more flexibility to pursue opportunities outside of Jersey without losing the residence they have built up", he added.

The new rules enable people who spend time away from the island for work, study, family commitments or other opportunities to retain the residence they have built up when they return.

Another change is the residential status previously known as Registered has been renamed Standard.

A new Licensed for Lease Only status allows eligible people to rent qualified property without being able to buy it.
