Listed town hall clock tower repairs to begin
South Tyneside CouncilWork to preserve an almost 120-year-old clock tower is begin later.
Repairs to the structure, which is part of the Grade II listed South Shields Town Hall, will see contractors work on the bell hammers, support beams and clockfaces.
South Tyneside Council described the tower as one of the area's "most recognisable landmarks", but warned it was showing signs of deterioration. The project is expected to be completed this year and will not affect access to the building.
Deputy leader Councillor Susan Sybenga said: "By investing in essential maintenance now, we're helping to protect this historic landmark and avoid more significant repairs in the future."
