Fresh appeal 21 years after fatal house fire

Police have renewed an appeal for information 21 years after a father died in a house fire in Shipley.

James Tomlin, 36, died from smoke inhalation after his home on Prospect Grove was deliberately set alight on 15 August 2005.

His pregnant fiancée and the couple's two sons were rescued by firefighters.

Det Insp Steve King of West Yorkshire Police said: "Twenty-one years may have passed but we remain committed to finding out who was responsible for his death."

The appeal has been launched on the anniversary of Tomlin's death.

Officers said they hoped the passage of time might encourage people with information to come forward.

Det Insp King said the pain and loss experienced by Tomlin's family had never gone away and police remained determined to secure justice.

He said: "Friendships and loyalties change over the years, which mean people can come forward now who may not have been able to at the time.

"We still believe that the person responsible will have told someone what they did that night."

Police said any new information, no matter how small, could help investigators.

Det Insp King added that developments in forensic science meant unsolved cases could now be reviewed using modern technology.
