Police say vandals have damaged a protected sea bird site in Barra in the Western Isles.

Fences and warning signs around nesting little terns at the island's Eoligarry Pier were destroyed some time between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

The birds, the UK's smallest tern, are a priority species for conservation.

Police Scotland said the offenders could face up to six months in jail, a fine of up to £5,000, or both.

Appealing for information, the force said: "It is everyone's responsibility to act within the law and to protect the environment and wildlife and these measures are part of a broader commitment to wildlife conservation and the protection of vulnerable species in the UK."
