Hospital's Burger King swapped for 'healthy choices'

A Burger King is being closed at a world-renowned hospital as it looks to provide "healthier options" for patients.

The takeaway chain at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, along with an outlet selling Starbucks coffee, will be replaced by new Peabodys Coffee and Baked Potato Co units.

However, a fast food presence will remain when Tortilla also opens on the concourse in September.

Burger King has been contacted for comment about the decision. Starbucks declined to comment.

The changes were announced by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on Thursday.

The trust said Burger King would close on Monday, followed by Starbucks on 4 October.

"The programme will introduce new food outlets, greater choice, healthier options and new services, including digital ordering where available," the statement read.

Reacting to the news on Facebook, one person said "[Burger King] may not have been health food, not sure its replacements are that healthy either."

Another added: "I was so shocked to see a Burger King on our first visit to Addenbrooke's. I'll be very pleased to see the back of it."

Other users said they would miss both the restaurant and Starbucks as a post-appointment "well done treat".

Tortilla, Peabodys Coffee and Baked Potato Co will all open in September, November and December respectively.

Food and drink options are due to continue to be available while the various changes take place.
