Surrey Police say two people were spotted throwing gravel from a bridge above the M3 on Wednesday

A driver escaped without injury after gravel thrown from a motorway bridge struck the vehicle they were travelling in, causing the windscreen to shatter.

Surrey Police said two people were spotted throwing the small stones from a footbridge above the M3, between junction three for Lightwater and junction four for Frimley, on Wednesday at about 09:00 BST.

The vehicle that was struck was travelling on the westbound carriageway, the force said.

An appeal for witnesses has been launched, with police asking anyone who was in the area or who has footage of what happened between 08:50 and 09:10 to contact them.

Investigating officer PC Newton, said: "The potential for tragedy with such reckless behaviour is enormous.

"Actions like this can and have had fatal consequences, and we will prosecute anyone found to be responsible."
