Resurfacing work will take place across 18 roads in a town to "prevent more costly repairs in the future".

The repairs, which will be carried out from 13 July until the end of August, will take place on several residential streets in Swindon, Wiltshire, such as Frobisher Drive, Gainsborough Way and Eastcott Road.

Nick Gardiner, the council's cabinet member responsible for transport, said: "By targeting roads that needs attention now, we can prevent more costly repairs in the future."

Swindon Borough Council's road resurfacing programme is costing the local authority £1m and comes off the back of a three week scheme to resurface Blagrove roundabout.

Roads will be closed from 08:00 to 18:00 BST when resurfacing is under way with access maintained for people who live on the streets.

The council said repairs should take between one to four days and that the work will include reactive pothole repairs, refreshed road markings and traffic signal upkeep.

Signs will be in place for drivers to inform them of diversions.

What do people think?

Residents of Swindon, when asked about the resurfacing programme, were understanding of the work that needed to be carried out, but also had concerns regarding possible disruption and delays.

On Eastcott Road, resident Liz Smith said: "I guess the work needs to be done, most of the roads around here are in pretty bad repair, but this is a very key route for transport up and down to town. It will be very disruptive."

Helen Turtle, from west Swindon, said: "It's disruption, but they do give you notice, and there's ways around it. It has to be done, right? You just have to put up with it."

Glen Jones said he was concerned with the condition of the roads in Swindon, as "there's potholes everywhere", and "if you're driving, you're very conscious of the fact that it could be very costly".

He added: "It will be disruptive. You can't have them fixed without people bringing their machinery and etc here. But do you want the roads to deteriorate, or do you want them maintained?"
