The reopening of a lakeside amphitheatre is being celebrated with two days of free live music and performances.

Telford Town Park Amphitheatre fell into disrepair and closed in the 1990s after previously hosting live music, drama and dance. It has since been restored and revamped by the council.

The reopening on Saturday kicks off with an opening address from Telford and Wrekin mayor Nathalie Page followed by musical performances.

There will be more shows throughout the summer with plans to welcome back some of the bands from the amphitheatre's heyday, the council said.

Tony Mallony, from local band Jester who play on Sunday, said: "The amphitheatre has always been a special place for us growing up and we are honoured to be a part of the grand reopening."

Hadley and District Orpheus Male Choir, who are marking their 125th anniversary this year said they also were looking forward to celebrating the opening weekend.

Group Midnight Jukes, who also perform on Sunday, added: "Being from Shropshire, we're honoured to be asked and we're very excited."

The amphitheatre is made up of a 400-seat terraced bowl with bench-seats, leading down to a wooden stage beside a pool.

In its heyday, during the 1980s, the amphitheatre by Randlay Pool in the park was "a vibrant cultural hub" which hosted regular live gigs and performances, before later closing in the 1990s, the council said.

Council leader Lee Carter said residents approached the authority about restoring the feature in 2024 and funding was approved earlier this year for work to be carried out.

New lights, stage, security rails and electrics have been installed as well the site being tidied up.

The opening weekend also marks the official launch of Telford Theatre on Tour 2026, a programme designed to showcase affordable cultural experiences, some that will be put on at the new amphitheatre, the council said.

"Alongside the redevelopment of Telford Theatre and plans for the amphitheatre, this programme represents a significant investment in our borough – creating opportunities for people to come together, share experiences and take pride in our growing cultural offer," councillor Angela McClements said.

Due to the anticipated popularity of the amphitheatre reopening, the council is warning visitors of potential queues at busy times.
