Motorway workers find suspected human remains

Suspected human remains have been found by road workers close to a motorway bridge, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police said the discovery was made close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 of the M67 on Tameside at about 23:00 BST on Monday.

A force spokesperson said officers were working with "specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident".

The motorway was initially closed in both directions between the junctions, but the westbound carriageway has now reopened.

National Highways said there was "currently no estimated time for reopening of the eastbound carriageway".

"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time," a spokesperson said.

They advised drivers to "plan ahead", adding: "You may wish to reroute or even delay your journey."

A diversion along the A627 and the A57 remains in place.
