DriveAbility has been teaching people with disabilities and those affected by medical conditions

A charity which helps people learn to drive said it will not be able to continue, unless more volunteers can be found to help.

DriveAbility has been teaching people with disabilities, older people and those affected by medical conditions for 20 years.

It is an independent charity working with Health and Community Services, Driver and Vehicle Standards, GPs, parish licensing authorities, and the police.

Pam Ward, who helped set up the charity after suffering a serious stroke, said: "We desperately need some young blood because this charity won't continue, unless we get some younger people on board."

She added: "We desperately need a driving instructor to support our amazing Fiona, who is our current instructor.

"I would suggest they look at our website, there are details on there and I just hope it interests people to think about helping other people similar to the situation that I was in.

"Get in touch with us if you are interested, we would be interested in you."

'A good feeling'

Reflecting on the success of the charity over two decades she said: "I have very mixed emotions - I'm feeling quite shocked and thrilled that something quite good came out of my stroke, which was fairly horrendous.

"There are wonderful people that support it now and help run it, and all the amazing people that we've got back on the road driving - it's a good feeling.

"When we started we had quite a lot of people that wanted to get back to driving or learn to drive.

"Over the years the charity have had so many lovely comments, saying that its changed their lives, we even had a lady who said to me for the first time in her life, she could take her daughter to school.

"There are incredible stories, really really incredible."
