Classic scooters to be displayed at city Mod event

A fleet of more than 200 classic scooters will be the centrepiece of an event celebrating Mod culture in Derby.

The free event, called Ride the Mod Wave, will take place in and around the city's Cathedral Quarter on 15 August.

Scooters from Mercia Scooter Club will be on display in the Market Place, and there will also be musical performances, stalls and screenings of the 1979 British classic film, Quadrophenia.

The event, which will also see DJs perform at the Market Hall from late afternoon into the evening, has been organised by Derby's Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BID).

There will also be free crafting sessions and stalls selling vintage clothes, records and other items from the era in the Market Hall.

Scooters were the classic mode of transport for Mods, a youth culture that came from London jazz clubs in the 1950s and became a national phenomenon in the 1960s.

Gemma Pindard, deputy manager for both Cathedral Quarter BID and St Peters Quarter BID, said the event would be the first of its kind in Derby.

"We can't wait to host all the scooters so people who love the Mod era can come to Derby and see them," she added.

"We would like to thank Mercia Scooter Club for agreeing to bring their scooters into Derby and putting them on display."
